Friday Flashback: the blind date that started it all . . .

Just in case you don't know how Robert and I met, I figured it was time to tell our story. After all, you are reading about our married life, so it's only right you know how we got to be Mr and Mrs. Plus, whether you're married or just dating, I think it's important to think back on how it all started from time to time. Remembering your roots reminds you of your journey as a couple and how strong you've become over the years.

Robert and I met by accident. A mutual friend of ours had arranged for me to go on a blind date; however, I wasn't there to meet Robert and he wasn't there to meet me. My date was Robert's friend, and hubby got dragged along as his friend's support (lucky for us)! Robert said he noticed me from day one, but proving how loyal he is, he never once implied his feelings or made a move.

It took a little longer for me to realize how I felt. The signs were there from the very beginning though. When I went home after my blind date, I told my mum that although my date was cute, Robert was so much more attractive! Despite how obvious of an indication that last statement should have been, I ended up dating Robert's friend because I thought what I was feeling was directed towards him. Our relationship didn't last long, a month at most, but that whole time I kept thinking about Robert's stories and how great he was. In-fact, I thought about him every morning. There was a sign for "Robert Lane" that I passed every day and instantly I thought about him. I still thought everything I was feeling was just admiration for a friend- boy, I couldn't be more wrong!

About a month after the blind date and I split up, I received a random text message asking me when I was getting Xbox Live. I had deleted both my ex's and my future hubby's numbers so I had no idea who it was (poor Robert). I kept quiet, and when I realized it was him (through much sneaky research), we arranged to meet up and play Call of Duty.

From there we just kept spending time together. Robert hinted at his feelings, but it still took me a while before I realized how I felt. When I went to drop him off one night, we struck up a conversation and ended up talking for hours. The more I learned about him the more I was fascinated. Robert is unlike any man I have ever met and it was then I realized how long I'd actually liked him and that I wanted to be with him. I admitted my feelings a few days later, and the very next day (December 28th, 2006), we started dating. Our first official date? To see Casino Royale.

Almost five years in we're still together, and now, we're enjoying our first year as husband and wife! It's so wonderfully unbelievable.

What's your story? How did you and your partner meet?

  1. Hello Sarah! I read your blogs all the time, because it's like we switched places, and I feel compelled to comment on this one. Me and my squeeze met in a pub, at the uni I go to. He knew the friend of a friend, of a roommate, of my roomate's friend's friend. Did you get all that? We shouldn't have met at all. Entirely different lives and circles. Love works in mysterious ways... :)

  3. Awww, I just love this story! I think it's important to remember the way it all started, because no matter how much your life may change from how it was "then", it's awesome to realize that every minute detail got you to where you were, and then where you are now. I often think back to college days and wish that I'd transfered to NC State when they accepted my transfer request, but then I realize I never would have met/broken up with a particular ex. Then I would never have made friends with a particular snob from our mutual class (think blond wanna-be actor), had lunch at McAlisters, got promoted, transfered and interviewed by HoneyBaked. Then, when I think I never would have started my training there, met Nate and fell deeply in love, etc etc, it nearly breaks my heart!
