Keeping the spark alive on opposite schedules

Throughout the four and a half years Robert and I have been together, our relationship has endured some trials. For about a year and a half, we lived in two separate parts of the state. When you're dating a man that doesn't like talking on the phone, that can be difficult. Now that we're married, we're going through another, less serious trial; we're working on opposite schedules. So even though now we live in the same house we barely see each other. When I wake up he's asleep, and when he comes home, I'm asleep.
We both understand that right now it's something we need to do. With the economy the way it is companies aren't just handing out jobs so that couples can have the same hours. You have to take a good job when it comes along even if the schedule is opposite to your husband's shift. But it is difficult because, whether you're married or just dating someone, you want to spend a lot of your time together.
Robert and I make it work though. For both of our lunch breaks, we call each other and find out how the other's day is going. Every night when he comes home, I get a kiss goodnight because he knows how much I miss kissing him during the day (although, some nights I'm so asleep I couldn't tell you anything about it). As for our weekends, since we both work some Saturdays, we make sure there's at least one day where we make plans to spend the whole day together.
They are little steps, and right now we're gradually adjusting to married life on opposite schedules. You definitely miss the little things like eating dinner together every night, but the other little things, like getting your goodnight kiss, all contribute to keeping that spark alive.

  1. totally know where you're coming from here as I am in a long distance relationship. we're 907 miles apart. Im happy that you're doing everything I would have suggested; that being setting aside a day out of the week dedicated to just you two. Keep pushing forward and everything will hopefully fall into place soon! <3
